Sound in Psychological Horrors

Sound is a key factor in setting the suspense and atmosphere in the psychological horror genre. Psychological Horror games like Silent Hill don't really use non diegetic sounds. They use diegetic sound effects such as crying babies and static radio effects to increase the creepiness and suspense. They also don't use any music to make it seem like a real life experience. Here is an example of Silent Hills P.T. gameplay:

In comparison to games psychological horror films such as The Shining use a lot of non-diegetic suspenseful and creepy music to increase the fearful mood of the film and trigger emotion from the audience as if they are in the film. Music and sound is key in adding emotion to a scene such as fear, terror, anticipation and can completely change the meaning, genre or story of any footage.

Film Distribution

The process of film distribution means that a film is released and available for the audience to view. Before the film is distributed the film distributor works out the plan for marketing and advertising of the film, so it becomes well known and is successfully delivered to the target audience. The film can either be distributed in the cinemas or straight onto DVDs to be purchased or shown on TV. Here is a video of how film distribution usually works.

Gender Representation and Stereotypes in Media

In media gender is represented in very stereotypical ways. Men are represented as being strong, powerful in comparison to women. They are sometimes viewed as wild and viscous creatures in types of media such as aftershave adverts to show off their masculinity. In those types of adverts they show that women cannot resist the men's scent and are usually crawling on top of the men like animals. Even til this day women are still viewed as the weaker gender and they always seem to be treated as a helpless and brainless in media. In films these stereotype representations vary. They usually have individual characters and are not as gender stereotypical. Recent movies have a strong female lead role. For example The Hunger Games which have a brave and smart female main character.

All the movies above have a strong female lead character.
More ways in which characters of certain genders are represented are to certain roles they play, such as

Film Title

We wanted the title to be simple but effective as the opening sequence begins. We put it on a black screen with a simple white font, as the "O" from "Locked" had a keyhole, so it looks professional. We also made it zoom into the screen as it comes on like it is coming towards this audience. This creates the effect as if the text is dangerous and intimidating just like the creepy character from the psychological horror sequence we made.

Psychological Horror

Psychological Horror is a subgenre of horror. Psychological Horror doesn't make the audience feel scared with jump scares or monsters or supernatural beings. It makes them feel scared by using their deepest emotions, fears and feelings of paranoia, suspicion, distrust, self-doubt. Elements of a psychological horror focus on the mental state of the audience. In Psychological Horrors there are often plot twists
